What do Home Carers do?

Working in Home Care

Carers help older people living at home by providing the support they need to manage everyday tasks. By assisting them to remain independent and connected to their community, Carers help older people to live happy, healthy, and meaningful lives. With a Carer's help, many people can live safely at home where they might otherwise need to consider residential care.

The responsibilities of a Carer include tasks such as:

  • Assist people to get out of bed, use the bath or shower, use the toilet, and get dressed

  • Remind people to take any medication they have been prescribed by their doctor

  • Make meals for people, according to their dietary needs and preferences

  • Help people to use eating utensils, if they need assistance with eating

  • Monitor the expiry dates on food in the fridge or pantry

  • Provide companionship for people through friendly conversation and activities like walking and playing games

  • Help people to move around their home, such as getting up from a chair or going up and down stairs

  • Drive people to do their shopping and errands (or shop on their behalf) and put items away for them

  • Drive people to appointments and social groups and catch ups

  • Assist people with light physiotherapy exercises and mobility

  • Help with cleaning and housework, such as dusting, vacuuming, making the bed, and changing bed linen

  • Assist with laundry duties such as washing, hanging, and folding clothes

  • Observing the overall wellbeing of people and letting Managers know if there is any change to their condition

Carers are sometimes also known as Aged Care Workers, Caregivers, Personal Care Assistants, or Personal Care Workers.
